How to Properly Change Your WordPress Username

Do you want to change the username you use when logging in to your WordPress website?

So you’d like to change a username on your site? Unfortunately, a default installation of WordPress doesn’t allow username changes.
It’s not possible to change your username in WordPress using the same method as changing your full name or password, but there are a few ways around that.

We can show you how to fix that problem by using a plugin called Username Changer.

When you go to edit a user, the username is greyed out and there’s a “Usernames cannot be changed” message beside it.

When you first set up your WordPress site, you created a login username and password. However, at some point you may find yourself needing to switch them. We’ve discussed how to choose a new password in the past – but how do you change WordPress usernames?

Even though you can’t just log into your site and pick a new name for your account, there are a couple of easy solutions. For example, you can alter your username manually in just a few minutes. To make the process even easier, you can install a plugin such as Easy Username Updater.

Why you’d want to change your WordPress username

Before we walk you through how to change your username, it’s worth considering why you might want to do that. There are a number of possible reasons, but here are a few of the most common:

  • You need a more secure username. This is particularly relevant if you went with the default admin choice initially, since that name is incredibly easy for hackers to guess.
  • You want to hand over your admin account to another user.
  • You’d like to choose a username that is more consistent with your site’s style and/or branding.

Whatever the reason, you’ll be happy to know that the process of changing your username isn’t hard. Still, it’s important to pick your new name carefully. Try something unique, yet memorable, and avoid basing it on personal information (which is easier to guess).

How to change WordPress usernames (two simple methods)

There are two main ways to change your WordPress username. You can do it manually, or install a plugin to simplify the process. Both methods are effective, and your choice will largely come down to personal preference. We recommend reading through each option, then picking the one you’d like to try.

First, however, you’ll want to make sure you have a recent backup of your site in place. You’ll be making changes to your admin user account, after all, and you don’t want to accidentally lock yourself out of your site. With a backup in place, you can proceed with no worries.

1. Change your username manually

Since WordPress doesn’t provide a simple way to rename your admin account, you’ll have to use a short workaround to get the job done. In a nutshell, what you’ll be doing is creating a new admin account, transferring all your existing content to it, and then deleting the old account.

First, navigate to Users > Add New in your WordPress dashboard:

Here, you can create your new account. Enter a username, and fill in the rest of the information. Don’t forget to choose a strong password (your best bet is to stick with one of WordPress’ automatically generated passwords) and set the account’s role to Administrator.

You’ll also need to use a different email address than what you use for your current account (don’t worry – you can always change back to your original email address after you complete the process).

When you’re done, click on Add New User.

Next, you’ll need to log out of your WordPress site and log back in using your new account. Go to the Users tab again, and look for your old admin account. Click on Delete underneath the username for your old account:

You’ll see a prompt asking you what to do with the account’s content. Select the option labeled Attribute all content to:, and pick your new username in the drop-down menu:

This will transfer the ownership of all your pages, posts, and so on from the old to the new account. Then, click on Confirm Deletion.

That’s it! Your old account will be deleted, and your new account will be ready to go with its updated username. However, you might want to stick around and see what this process looks like using a plugin as well.

2. Use a plugin to simplify the process

There’s another way to change WordPress usernames – install a plugin designed for that purpose. This method can be simpler and doesn’t involve creating a new account. Plus, you get to keep your email address.

While there are a few plugins that can help you out, Easy Username Updater is our recommended choice. It’s lightweight, well-reviewed, and very simple to use. After installing and activating the plugin, you can tweak its options under Users > Username Updater:

Would you like to change your name on your WordPress website? While it is easy to change your full name from your user profile, you’ll see a message that usernames can’t be changed.

This can be frustrating and confusing to beginner WordPress users. The good news is that there are several workarounds to change your WordPress username.

In this article, we’ll show you three ways to change your WordPress username. You can use the links below to jump to the method you wish to use.

  • Method 1: Create a New User and Delete The Old One
  • Method 2: Change Username by Using a Plugin
  • Method 3: Change Your WordPress Username Using phpMyAdmin

Method 1: Create a New User and Delete The Old One

The easiest way to change your WordPress username is by creating a new user with your desired username and with the administrator user role.

The only catch is, you will need to use a different email address than the one used by your current account.

Note: If you’re using Gmail, you can insert a plus sign with additional letters after your username. For example, if your email address is myname@gmail.com, you can use the email address myname+wordpress@gmail.com. It will still go to the same email inbox, but WordPress will consider it a separate email address.

After creating the new account, you need to log out of WordPress and then log in with the new user account you just created.

Next, head over to the Users » All Users page and then click the ‘Delete’ link under your old username to remove it.

When you delete the old username, WordPress will ask what you want to do with any content created by that user.

Make sure that you click the ‘Attribute all content to’ option and then select the new user you just created.

After that, you should click the ‘Confirm Deletion’ button to delete the old user account.

Congratulations, you have now successfully changed your WordPress username. If you want to use the same email address as before, then you can now change the email address of the new user.

Method 2: Change Username by Using a Plugin

Another simple way to change your WordPress username is by using a plugin. If you are worried about using too many plugins, then let us assure you that you can safely delete the plugin once you have changed your WordPress username.

The first thing you need to do is install and activate the Easy Username Updater plugin. For more details, see our step by step guide on how to install a WordPress plugin.

Upon activation, simply go to the Users » Username Updater page and then click the ‘update’ link next to the username you want to change.

If you’d like to notify the user about the change, then make sure you check the ‘Send User Notification’ box first.

That’s all! Now you can remove the plugin from your site.

Method 3: Change Your WordPress Username Using phpMyAdmin

This method is a little bit complicated as it requires that you make direct changes to your WordPress database.

We recommend that users avoid doing this if possible, since it’s easy to make a mistake and cause errors on your WordPress site. However, in some cases, you may not have an option, such as when you forget your WordPress username and email address and get locked out.

First, you will need to log in to your web hosting dashboard and click the ‘phpMyAdmin’ icon under the Databases section.

Your dashboard may look different if you’re using a different host, but the phpMyAdmin option should still be available.

This will launch phpMyAdmin in a new browser tab.

You will need to select your WordPress database if it is not already selected.

You will now see your WordPress database tables. By default, WordPress database tables use wp_ as a prefix before each table’s name. It is possible that you may have changed the database prefix to something else.

You need to click on the wp_users table on the left hand side. Then you should click the ‘Edit’ link next to the username that you wish to change.

Now you will be able to type the new username you wish to use in the user_login field.

When you’re done, you’ll need to click the ‘Go’ button at the bottom of the screen to save the new username.

That’s all! Now you should be able to log in to your dashboard with your new username.

Conclusion

It’s important to pick unique, secure login credentials when you first create your website. However, it is possible to change those credentials after the fact. Whether you’re concerned that you made an insecure choice, or simply want a change that better suits your needs, creating a new username for your site doesn’t have to be difficult.
